A new continent and a new challenge!

Welcome to a new adventure and another classic endurance rally.

Grace and Mick de Haas are teaming up once more in the little red Mercedes 230 SL Pagoda  (1966) to compete in their first African adventure. Eight thousand five hundred kilometers driving from Cape town -South Africa through Namibia, Botswana and even a small part of Zambia. The journey took 28 days in total.

Grace had been to some of these places with KLM but I had never been to South-Africa or any of the other countries.

We did not expect the rally to be very tough in terms of roads and terrain, but as you will see from the daily reports in some places it was not that easy.

Some time after returning home from the P2P finish in Paris in July 2016 , the Mercedes 230SL-R went back to Altena Classics for a complete check up and repair session and she is now in good shape again to tackle the next rally.

In the section car  on this website you can see what has been done and or has been altered after the last P2P experience.

For this rally there were 36 competitors from 12 countries entered.  Quite a few of them Grace and or I knew from other rallies.

Tom and Femke van den Berg in their white Pagode – “The White Lady”-  also joined us in Africa. In fact the “Little Red Devil” and “the White Lady” have shared a container on the way to and back from Cape Town.

Our 2013 P2P friends Dirk and Alexandra de Groen from Florida entered the rally in their beautifully prepared Mercedes Ponton..

On October the 7th we all met at the  presitigious One & Only hotel in Cape Town and after the technical and safety checks of the cars on Sunday the 8th of October we started on Monday October 9 for the 28 day journey.

It has been a fantastic journey on a beautiful continent. The group of competitors in this rally has been the best I have ever rallied with. Unfortunately there will remain a very dark shadow over this event after the terrible road accident of our rally friends Jan and Dana from Prague.

It made us realize that this type of rallies is not without danger.

As usual I have kept a daily report and we have included some pictures from this magnificent adventure.

Happy reading.

Mick & Grace
